Wilderness. Mountains rearing straight up from the sea. Deep wooded gorges. The dramatic scenery and colours of the island creates landscapes of harsh but beautiful countryside. Charming small villages away from the modern tourist industry. Leave the beaten track and get to know another Crete.
These walks presented here are on the western part of the islands, mainly on the less visited, and to many tourists, unfriendly southcoast.
For those of you who may wish to do some walking in Crete, there are walks here for all ages and levels of fitness.
The whole island is criss-crossed by trails, some of them used only by shepherds. It is possible to walk all day without meeting a soul and still reach a village where you can eat and sleep and set off next morning for another day in nature. There are areas that are practically unknown and totally uninhabited, with undisturbed flora and fauna, in deep gorges or high up in the mountains.
The dramatic gorges, the coastline and a highmountain walk in Lefki Ori "The White Mountains".
