Poland is located in the northeast of Europe with a coastline to the Baltic Sea and borders in the east Russia (Kaliningrad), Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine, in the south Slovakia and Czech Republic and Germany in the west.

Poland consists almost entirely of lowlands in the northern and central regions but in the south the border is largely formed by the Sudeten and Carpathian Mountains.

I have been walking in Bieszczady in the southeast corner of Poland, the most eastern part of the Beskid mountains next to the Ukraine and Slovakian borders, and in the Tatra mountains in the southern Poland next to Slovakia. The Tatras form the central and highest section of the Carpathian mountain range.

Bieszczady.
We had never heard of Bieszczady before we found a website about the mountains and the National Park.

It's the most desert part of Poland, with very few inhabitancy. There are wild animals like bear and wolf among in the national park. The mountains are not as high and has no alpin character like Tatra.

We stayed in Ustrzyki Gorne, a small community as far southeast in Poland you can get. A perfect set off for walks in the national park.

Tatra.
Zakopane is the entrance to the Tatra mountains. It is situated 100 km south of Krakow and from Krakow you can go either by bus or train. Bus is recommended, the train is very slow. The highest peak in the Polish Tatras is Rysy (2499 m).

In Zakopane many overnight accommodation is offered. Almost every house has rooms to let and in the whole area there are hundreds of hotels and at least 2 campsites, very close to the mountains.

It is the height season all months of the year. In summer and autumn, hiking in the mountains attracts the tourists. In wintertime it's skiing, and Zakopane is a most popular wintersport place with lifts and ski slopes.
