About walking
As well as being pleasurable, walking improves ones health and fitness and a journey on two feet yields a satisfying sense of living.

This site is dedicated to the many great experiences I've had walking in different places of Europe and is meant only as inspiration to you who might be interested.

The walks are for everybody in reasonable shape and fitness. - "I've walked 'em, I'm past fifty and a smoker!" - but I walk a lot and ride 30 km on my bicycle every day all year to keep fit.

- Enjoy the site, enjoy the walk. Have a good time!

Some of my first experiences with rambling in mountains took place in Poland so why not let this epwalks.com project take the first steps there as well?

I have been in Poland now several times since the first time. My walking companion and I have visited the Bieszczady in the far southeast corner of Poland and the Tatra Mountains in the south of Poland bordering Slovakia and both destinations are great for rambling and trekking.

You'll find brief information about the country and the walks. Key map and maps marked with the walks.

New on this site: Greek islands.
Crete is my favourite and still worth visiting. Great for walking. Walk the coastlines or go gorge walking. You will find inspiration by reading about my walks in Samaria (well known) and Prassano Gorge (not at all well known).

Remember
- not to leave anything in the environment but your footprint when you're trekking.
- always tell someone where you go and when if you walk alone.
- do not overestimate your energy.
- that fine weather in the mountains can change very quickly and dramatically to very bad.

If you're a beginner or just not an experienced rambler this checklist for walkers might be useful. It's for walking in generally and ought to be a part of your permanent equipment.

Notice that the equipment listed 'The walk in brief...' on this site, is the minimum equipment to bring with you on the walks.

Checklist
Walking boots (broken-in and comfortable is essential)
Wind and waterproof shield coat (especially for mountains and walks outside the summer months)
Shirts (long sleeved for sun protection)
Sunhat (with a shadow to protect your ears and neck from the sun)
Sunglasses
Suncream
Long trouses (for sun protection)
Socks (fitting is necessary for your wellness)
Fleece (to keep you warm in the evenings and in the mountains)
First aid kit
Repair kit (needle, thread, sticky tape like gaffa)
Torch
Knife
Compass
Whistle
Groundsheet of plastic

Going on a day trip you need to carry water and some food or/and an energybar in your daypack depending on how long you have planned to walk, but it's a good thing always to have some energybars in case of emergency.
